The underestimated bottleneck
Finding accommodation is one of the biggest hurdles facing international skilled workers and trainees immigrating to Germany today. Particularly in the commercial sector—such as nursing, skilled trades, logistics, and catering—it is often not the job that causes them to fail, but the lack of affordable housing.
The German housing market is tight. In many regions, there is a difference of between €8 and €12 per square meter between existing rents and new rents. New construction projects are few and far between, while demand continues to rise. This situation is also having an increasing impact on the recruitment of international skilled workers.
Expensive temporary solution
Newly arrived skilled workers often have no choice but to rent furnished temporary accommodation. In large cities such as Berlin, Munich, or Hamburg, small apartments can easily cost between €1,200 and over €2,000 per month. This is hardly affordable in the long term for trainees and skilled workers, even if they are in full-time employment.
The virtual company flat share as a practical solution
A proven alternative is the virtual company flat share. Employers rent furnished 2- or 3-room apartments and provide them to their skilled workers for the first 3 to 12 months available.
Advantages at a glance:
immediate move-in upon arrival
calculable costs (approx. 500–800 euros per room)
Ideal for probationary periods, training, or recognition phases
fewer dropouts in the first few months
The employer acts as the main tenant, thereby creating planning security for both sides.
Relief for businesses
In addition to living space, companies benefit from organizational relief, for example in the following areas:
Apartment registration and additional costs
Internet and power connection
Moving in and out
Guidance on dealing with authorities
This facilitates integration and ensures a stable start to operation.
Housing determines successful integration
Affordable housing is a critical success factor when recruiting international professionals. Companies that plan housing solutions early on increase retention, reduce dropout rates, and secure a clear competitive advantage.
